Too many projects! Too little time!

This week has been pretty good. I do finishing work for customers, and this week I got two things seamed up. I've also made some progress on my knitting projects but it is a little hard to tell because I have five going at once and I've been working on them equally. So they are growing slowly. I have decided that I am not liking this "five projects at once" thing. It is starting to feel overwhelming. I think I ended up starting so many because they are all sweaters, and none have a real deadline because they are all for me or for Ava. As we all know with sweaters, they can take a while and they get boring, so I just couldn't help but start more and more.

Here is what I have going right now:

Project #1 The Klaralund Sweater from Cornelia Tuttle Hamilton Book 2: made with Noro Silk Garden

I like this sweater because there is hardly any shaping so it is really easy to knit. I hate this sweater because it has hardly any shaping so it will probably be entirely unflattering. Obviously I didn't think that one through. To add insult to injury I am stupidly making a size too small. I've thought about frogging the whole thing but I just can't bear to see all that work gone to waste. I'm going to finish it, stretch and block the heck out of it, and hope for the best.

Project #2: Leaves Sweater from Crochet Me: made with Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino

I've changed the pattern a bit for this sweater. The pattern calls for leaves hanging down on the bottom. I chose to go leaf less because in this color I thought it would make me look like Peter Pan. I think the bottom border looks just as good without. When I saw the book I just had to start this project right away. Before seeing it, I could never remember seeing a crocheted adult sweater that I actually would wear! It was also so much fun to do a little crochet. I started on crochet years back and haven't done much since I began knitting. This sweater has made me remember what I like about crochet. It is so easy to fix mistakes! No such thing as a dropped stitch! This pattern is also nice because it is always changing and it hasn't gotten boring. Oh Leaves Sweater how I love you!

Project #3: Seedling Sweater from the book Minnies: made out of Filatura Di Crosa Zara Plus

I started this project out of necessity sort of. You see, The Scarlet Skein had a huge 75% off sale and I just had to buy 60+ balls of Zara Plus. So I ended up with only 4 of this color and that is just enough to make the 12 month size that will fit my daughter for not much longer. So that's how this one got on the needles. It's going pretty quickly. The strange this is that the pattern called for a size 8 needle and I had to go up to a size 10.5 to get gauge. And I'm using the same weight of yarn the pattern calls for. Go figure!

Project #4: Smock Coat from Simply Baby: made with Debbie Bliss Cotton Cashmere

I also have a love/hate relationship with this project. I love the pattern. I cannot wait to see little Ava running around in a cute little red coat. I love the yarn. I have used this one in the past and I love the drape of the fabric. I HATE knitting it. It is miles and miles of seed stitch on size 4 needles. It is really boring me to tears. The problem is that I have to finish it this season so Ava can wear it while it fits her. So I'm going to have to set up knitting incentives for myself to finish this one up.

Project #5: Tilted Duster out of Interweave Knits: made out of Filatura Di Crosa Zara Plus

More uses for my Zara Plus! I really really really love this pattern. It's just the kind of sweater I would wear all winter long. The Zara is 100% merino so it will be so warm. Zara is also machine wash and dry. I did up a swatch and through it in the washer and dryer and the fabric softened and held up great! So I think I am going to be more than happy with the finished result!

I think what I am going to have to do to make some serious headway here, is pick just two projects for awhile to rotate. Hopefully that will make me actually finish something. I think one of those projects is going to have to be the Smock Coat and the second will either be Leaves Sweater or Tilted Duster because I enjoy those so much.

On top of all that knitting is the knitting I do for the shop. So I just purchased the Felt Clog pattern by Fiber Trends and the Children's Felt Clogs too. Over the past few days I knit up a pair of the children's clogs in Ava's size. Im going to do a pair for me next. My plan is to get that done quickly so I can put them on display at The Scarlet Skein. In January I'd like to offer a class on the pattern and also a fun extra class on embellishing the clogs with needle felting. I'm going to bring all my roving and just let those who sign up come and play with the colors and design.

And as if I needed any more yarn or any more projects, I also bought this:

This is Lorna's Laces Lion and Lamb in the Gold Rush colorway. I have big plans to make the Clapotis Shawl. I think that too would make an awesome class for January. It is such a popular pattern right now!

I have no clue how I'm going to get all this done. The good news is that tomorrow my husband and I are leaving for an overnight stay in the Santa Barbara area. That means some extra knitting time for me. I'm planning on bringing the Smock Coat and the materials for the Felted Clogs. I really really want to start the Clapotis but I am trying to be responsible and hold off.
It should be a fun trip, and my very sweet husband recommended that tomorrow will be reserved for yarn stores. I can't wait.

It's Big, It's Brown, and It's Bathing....

Yay! It's Done! It's finally Done!!!

Well, I do still have to block it, pick up stitches for the collar, seam it all together, and put a zipper in...

But still... Its DONE!!

Up next: Brightly colored, stripy berets for my daughter...
and... maybe more projects too!

I might just cast on 2 or 12 tonight to celebrate!

Re-Doing, Re-Tooling

One of the guys at the last Men's Spring Knitting Retreat (hey Vince!) taught a class on continental knitting and purling. I've been practicing it on and off since May, and just got the perfect excuse for doing a LOT of practice.

The Mom's Cardigan
After doing endless ribbing on US0 needles, I finally made my way up to the stockinette stitch of the cardigan I'm working on.

It only took an inch or two of knitting to realize that the fabric was going to gather way more than I planned as it transitioned from the ribbing to the plain fabric. I considered it to be completely unacceptable and I couldn't think of any way to fix it, so I realized I had to start all over...which meant re-doing all the ribbing.

My practice in doing ribbing in the continental way paid off, as I was able to re-do all the ribbing (actually about 10% more...so I wouldn't get the same amount of gathering).

I'm quite pleased with my progress so far. In fact, I'm pretty certain I will have to link to Ravelry for the remainder of my photos of this project so that my family won't get to see the project until my mom does at Christmas.

Here's a video describing how I do continental ribbing, in case there are those out there interested in learning it.

Four Days of Love
One of the best parts about four day holidays like this past weekend's Thanksgiving holiday here in the States, is that I get time to spend with my two loves.

Unfortunately, only one of them will let me take a picture of them!

Actually, Nico takes a bit of time getting used to me each weekend when I get home from work travel, and four days in a row with him and he turns into a complete love-bug.

New Knitting

I've just completed four new sweet, whimsical, little designs for springtime out of this
rainbow of Louet Gems Fingering Weight yarn.

Patterns will be revealed in the new year... but I'll give you a hint now:
Something for little girls.

It's been awhile since I designed for little ones. It was nice to get back to it. :)

Gift Cards/Certificates

Am I the only one that feels uncomfortable using a gift certificate at a restaurant or coffee house or car wash, etc.?

Advice For Gift Card Recipients
I know I'm probably weird in this way, but I always feel strange whipping out a gift card or gift certificate to pay for some services or product I've just consumed or purchased.

I shouldn't.  The person that gave it to me paid good money to the establishment to purchase the gift card, and when businesses sell gift cards, they are well aware that people will cash them in.  And we always tip at restaurants on the full amount of the bill.  Still yet, I feel uncomfortable using them.

Thaddeus has come up with a way of presenting gift cards to businesses in a way that makes me feel much better about using them.  As soon as we walk into the business and are greeted by an employee, he says something like "Thanks...a good friend of ours gave us a $50 gift certificate, so we were excited to try your restaurant/coffee house/car wash, etc."

I don't know why, but presenting it this way, as thought it's been a successful way of promoting their business and at the same time telling them right up front we'll be using a gift card, seems to make it a lot less uncomfortable for me.

Current Knitting/Crocheting/Spinning
Yes, it's been a while, and in that time I've done all three of the above.

Knitting:
I've been able to finish the neck cowl using the three colors of Possum/Merino yarn.

I used two different edgings...the blue edging is a picot hemmed edge, and the green edging is a plain hemmed edging.

I got to use it this morning on my 11 block walk from the hotel to work in 25 degree weather.

All in all, it kept me quite toasty, and it was nice to know I could pull it up over my nose/mouth when it gets even colder up here in Canada.

Crocheting:
xx - content deleted - xx

Spinning:
Finally, there is an end in sight to the Optim Merino top I've been spinning.

A couple more weekends of spinning and I should have a boatload of merino yarn to play with.  I'll keep you updated.

Sockomplishment!

The new QueerJoe trademarked term for finishing a pair of hand-knit socks.

In The Season of Giving Thanks...

I can honestly be thankful that the ribbing is finally finished on my current sock project.

A couple of things about these socks:
  1. They have a long cuff - my hand-knit socks always seem to be excessively long in the leg when I'm knitting them, but as soon as I put them on, the cuff seems to shrink three inches.  So I made these much longer than I usually do and I used up all the yarn I had.
  2. They are shaped - the top has a v-shaping that pulls in the top a little giving the socks a great snug and fitted feeling.
  3. They are toe-up - the shaping idea I stole from Marlowe Crawford's Oliver Sock.  But her design is cuff-down.  So I adapted her idea to a toe-up, using my preferred heel from my standard sock recipe.

All-in-all, they turned out exactly as I had hoped.

Blogiversary Book Giveaway!

In celebration of my four year "blogiversary" I have a nice stack of knitting books to give away!

I love knitting books. Love. Them.
There are so many fabulous books out there, but here are a few newer releases that will really round out your knitting library.

Starting at the top of the stack...

What a completely charming little book this is. This isn't just a book of knitting patterns, a book of essays, or a recipe book.. it is actually all three. And it is put together in a very touching way. This book is written and illustrated by Michelle Edwards and in it she shares the role that knitting has played in her relationships with family, friends and her community throughout her life.

A great, go-to accessory book of 60 patterns all using Cascade 220 Sport yarn. There are 20 hats, 20 scarves, and 20 mitten designs for you to choose from. This book offers many cute patterns in a wide variety of styles so there is something here for everyone. This is a great resource for knitted gift ideas.

If you enjoyed Wendy Bernards first book offering, Custom Knits, as I did, then you will also love Custom Knits 2. As someone who loves sweater knitting, I really appreciate Wendy's amazing insight on how to plan, alter, add-on, convert, and customize sweater patterns. This book contains tons of extremely useful information as well as several beautiful garment designs. An amazing publication for sure.. although the pictures of the women modeling their sweaters with their bikini bottoms will always make me chuckle just a little bit. :)

In this book, Vicki Stiefel and Lisa Souza offer up a fun and relaxed approach to knitting with their 10 secrets to knitting success. Its a great read with lots of fun stories, information, and interviews.. not to mention... some seriously cute patterns too! I desperately am wanting to make my daughter the
Princess Garden Skirt.

Finishing School: A Master Class for Knitters

Ok... I seriously am in love with this book! My time as a knitter has taught me how important finishing is for every knitted project. This book covers it all. Zippers.. seaming.. steeking.. blocking.. everything. It's a great reference book. I think that everyone should own a copy!

To enter to win this collection of five fabulous books, please leave a comment (including contact information) under this post. In your comment I'd love to hear how long you have been a reader of Never Not Knitting and what your favorite knitting book is. And no.. you don't have to say Coastal Knits. :)

I will randomly pick and announce a winner from among the comments left on Sunday December 4th.
You have until December 3rd to enter.

Remember only one comment per person please. And if you do not leave any contact information for me such as an email address, ravelry id, or so forth, I will have to pick another winner if your name is chosen.
I have had too many problems with unclaimed prizes and it's important that I am able to get ahold of you if you win. Thank you!

And just to make sure.. you do know about the blogiversary pattern sale, right?

Latest Pet-Peeve

New York and the Northeast go at a bit more of a brisk pace than the rest of the country, in my experience.

It's E-Z Pass - Let's Make it E-Z, Shall We?
They talk faster, the walk faster and they definitely drive faster.

So why is it that the entire upstate NY population feels they must stop at E-Z Pass tolls?!?! (for those outside of the NY/NJ/PA area, E-Z Pass is the brand name for the little transponder you keep in your car to pass through toll booths paying automatically).

"E-Z" is the clever little way of telling you that passing through tolls should be EASY...not painfully, fucking SLOW!

With New Yorkers in the Albany area, it's always one of three things:
  1. They keep the transponder device in their glove compartment, and wait until they're at the toll booth to get it out...argh!
  2. They think they have to stop to have their toll registered...ARGH!
  3. They've run out of money on their account and it won't let them through, so they wait for a person to come take their cash toll...ARGH!
Please people...take a course...you KNOW I don't have much patience when I'm behind the wheel.

Current Knitting
Since I was working from home last week and off for Thursday and Friday of the Thanksgiving holiday, I got a lot of knitting done on the Milano Blanket, and I'm actually seeing a light at the end of the tunnel.

I've completed a total of 56 stripes (the blanket is displayed on a full-size hotel bed) and I have 10 more 8-row stripes to complete before I do the edging.

One obstacle I have with knitting this blanket at home is that Nico has decided it's enough like his mother, that he might be able to knead it long enough so that it expresses kitty-milk (it hasn't yet), so he pushes/kneads/claws into the blanket for about 10 minutes every time he sits in my lap.

Nico, thinking this time he might be able to express some milk from the Milano Blanket

Inspired to join the blogosphere!!

Hey there

My name is Alana. I've been completely obsessed now with knitting and crocheting for a little over 5 years. With just now joining Ravelry, I am so inspired to finally get organized and start blogging about all of my knitting adventures.

I have been happily married now for 5 1/2 years and have a beautiful little daughter who's picture will probably be popping up a lot.

I must mention that I have THE best job. I work at my local yarn shop, The Scarlet Skein. I have taught classes there for the past 4 years, but for the past year or so I've worked at the shop as well. I really have never liked any of my past jobs so I find it such a treat to get paid doing something that I absolutely love. aka: knitting, talking about knitting, teaching knitting classes, organizing knitting supplies.
Could it get better, really?

I look forward to developing this blog more over time and making good use of my Ravelry account. I go into work again tomorrow, so we'll see what this week will bring for me in the knitting world.
