The drop-column method is rather primitive. It is really easy and fast.
Cast on: multiple of + 3.
Row 1 (right side): Knit all sts.
Row 2: * Purl 3, yarn over; repeat * to last 3 sts, purl 3.
Row 3: Knit.
Row 4: Purl.
Repeat rows 3 -4 until you have reached your desired length.
Next row (Right side): Drop the fourth stitch from each edge and let it run down the length.
Bind off purlwise.
