Knit-Purl Combinations: Pattern 3 - Herringbone Texture

Only knit  and purl stitches are used to make up this herringbone texture knitting stitch and isn't too tricky for beginners, like myself.

Knitting instructions:

Cast on: multiple of 16 + 1 stitches.
Row 1: (right side): (K2, p2) twice,  k1, p2, k2, p2, *k3, p2, k2, p2, k1, p2, k2, p2; rep from * to last 2 stitches, k2
Row 2: P1, *k2, p2, k2, p3, k2, p2, k2, p1; rep from * to end
Row 3: K1, *p1, k2, p2, k5, p2, k2, p1, k1, ; rep from * to end
Row 4: P3, k2, p2, k1, p1, k1, p2, k2, *p5, k2, p2, k1, p1, k1, p2, k2; rep from * to last 3 stitches, p3
Repeat rows 1-4 till necessary for completing your project.

Abbreviations:
Knit stitch: K
Purl stitch: P

Cross Stitch (similar to herringbone stitch)

The cross stitch is kind of like a hybrid between a cross stitch and a 2 stitch cable. No cable needle is required to make this stitch; however, the tightness of the stitch does make the knitting process a bit more challenging. The cross pattern produces a surprisingly dense, rigid and unyielding fabric.  It is a great pattern for pillows and washcloths as well as bags, pillows, or scarves. 

Cast on:  multiple of 2 sts + 1.
Row 1 (Right side): Sl 1 wyib, * knit tbl of the second stitch on the left needle, then knit the first stitch, and drop them both from the needle at the same time;  Repeat from  * to end.
Row 2 (Wrong side): Sl 1 wyif, * purl the second stitch on the left needle, then purl the first stitch, and drop them both from the needle at the same time; Repeat from * to end.

Repeat rows 1-2.

Note: The flexibility of the fabric will increase somewhat through use of a larger pair of needles.

 

Cluster Stitch

The Cluster stitch isn't crochet; it's a knit stitch. To make this knitting pattern, please follow the instructions:

Cast on: multiple of 6  stitches + 5.
Row 1: Knit
Row 2: Purl
Row 3: Knit 3, * slip 4 stitches as if to knit; knit 1; then one by one, pass each slip stitch over the knit stitch and drop it; knit 1; repeat * to last 3 sts, knit 3
Row 4: Purl 3, * [purl 1, (knit 1, purl 1) twice] all in next stitch, purl 1; repeat * to last 3 sts, purl 3.
Row 5: Knit
Row 6: Purl
Row 7: * Slip 4 stitches as if to knit; knit 1; then one by one, pass each slip stitch over the knit stitch and drop it; knit 1; repeat * to last 5 sts, slip 4 stitches as if to knit; knit 1; then one by one, pass each slip stitch over the knit stitch and drop it
Row 8:  * [purl 1, (knit 1, purl 1) twice] all in next stitch, purl 1; repeat * to last 5 sts, [purl 1, (knit 1, purl 1) twice] all in next stitch.
Repeat rows 1-8 till necessary for completing your project.

Knit-Purl Combinations: Pattern 6 - Diagonal Stitch 2

Here's one of my favorite knit and purl combinations. It's reversible, making it a good choice for dishcloths, and blankets.

Knitting instructions:
Cast on: multiple of 6 sts.
Row 1: * Purl 2, knit 4; repeat from * to end.
Row 2: * Purl 4, knit 2; repeat from * to end.
Row 3: Repeat row 1.
Row 4: Repeat row 2.
Row 5: Knit 2, * purl 2, knit 4; repeat from * last 4 sts, purl 2, knit 2.
Row 6: Purl 2, * knit 2. purl 4; repeat from * last 4 sts, knit 2, purl 2.
Row 7: Repeat row 5.
Row 8: Repeat row 6.
Row 9: * Knit 4, purl 2; repeat from * to end.
Row 10: * Knit 2, purl 4; repeat from * to end.
Row 11: Repeat row 9.
Row 12: Repeat row 10.
Repeat rows 1-12 until you have reached your desired length.

Two Color Bee Stitch Pattern

Pattern 1

The bee stitch is an easy textured stitch pattern and it produces an interesting textured fabric. It is made by knit one below and you need to have an odd number of stitches.

Knitting instructions:
To “Knit 1 Below” , you put the tip of your needle through the center of the stitch below the stitch on the needle and slip off both strands at the same time

• Pattern 1

With color A, cast on: multiple of 2 sts + 1.
Row 1 (RS) : With color A, knit all sts.
Row 2: With color A, knit all sts.
Row 3: With color B, knit 1, * knit 1 below , knit 1; Repeat from * to end.
Row 4: With color B, knit all sts.
Row 5: With color A, knit 1, * knit 1, knit 1 below; repeat from * to last 2 sts, knit  2.
Row 6: With color A, knit all sts.
Repeat rows 3-6 until you have reached your desired length.

Pattern 2

• Pattern 2

Cast on: multiple of 2 sts + 1. Repeat the pattern between the arrows as many times as you like.
Row 1( Wrong side): Knit all sts.
Row 2: Knit 1, * knit 1 below , knit 1; Repeat from * to end.
Row 3: Knit all sts.
Row 4: Knit 1, * knit 1, knit 1 below; repeat from * to last 2 sts, knit  2.

Repeat rows 1-4 until you have reached your desired length.

The sheaves of wheat is one of those knitting patterns that looks so intimidating, but once you understand the method is a lot of fun to knit. This textured is good for large and long knits, like blankets, afghans.

Knitting instructions:
Cast on: multiples of 6 sts + 1.
Row 1: * Knit 4, purl 2; repeat from * to last st, knit 1.
Row 2: Purl 1, * knit 2, purl 4; repeat from * to end.
Row 3: * With yarn in back, insert right needle between next 4th and 5th sts on left needle; pull yarn through between sts, knit 4, then slip one strand of long st over 4 sts to wrap them; purl 2; repeat from * to last st, knit 1.
Row 4: Repeat row 2.
Row 5: Knit all sts.
Row 6: Purl all sts.
Row 7: Knit 1, * Purl 2, knit 4; repeat from * to end.
Row 8: * Purl 4, knit 2; repeat from * to last st, purl 1.
Row 9: Knit 1, * purl 2, with yarn in back, insert right needle between next 4th and 5th sts on left needle; pull yarn through between sts, knit 4, then slip one strand of long st over 4 sts to wrap them; repeat from * to end.
Row 10: Repeat row 8.
Row 11: Knit all sts.
Row 12: Purl all sts.

The knitting pattern looks like labyrinth on both the front and the back. It is a 17 row repeat, so it's good for large and long knits, like blankets, afghan.

Row 2: Purl all sts
Row 3: Knit 3, * purl 3, knit 15; repeat from *, ending last repeat with knit 12.

Row 6: Repeat row 4.
Row 7: * Knit 3, purl 15; repeat from * to end.

Scarf Knitting With Interesting Basketweave Texture

Basketweave is an easy stitch with many variations that combine knits and purls into a fabric that looks woven.  This basketweave pattern is based on a simple 18-row repeat.
I really do love the textured look of this stitch. There really is no right side or wrong side but I prefer the side that looks wavy as can be seen in these two pictures. Some folks will prefer the other side but it really doesn't matter as both sides look great.

Zig Zag Knitting Stitch

Add a little flair or a decorative element to your knitting. The Zig Zag knitting stitch is really an easy stitch to master and is a great way to add subdued texture for sweaters, skirts, hats

You can use any number of stitches + 2 edge stitches.
Row 1: edge st, knit across through back loop to last st, edge st
Row 2: edge st, purl across to last st, edge st
Repeat rows 1 and 2.

Openwork basket weave is a wonderful knitting stitch that's really quick and pretty easy to knit and makes a wonderful stitch for a scarf. All simply completed with a combination of knit (k), purl (p), cast on and bind off stitches to get some very unique designs.

Cast on: Multiple of 10 stitches + 7 + edge stitches.
