Butterfly Knitting Stitch

Done in a solid color, the butterflies are very prominent.

The butterfly stitch 's not difficult technique that creates a stack of loose strands. It is made by dropping a stitch down 5 rows, then picking up the stitch and  purl these 5 strands together with next st on needle.  The size of the "butterfly" can be varied by using more (or less) yarn in front.

Knitting instructions:
Cast on: Multiple of 10 stitches  + 5.
Rows 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 (RS): * Slip 5 wyif , knit 5; rep from * to last 5 stitches, slip 5 wyif (With yarn in front)
Rows 2, 4, 6, 8: Purl all stitches.
Row 10 - Work butterfly stitch loosely: Purl 2, *insert left hand needle down through the 5 loose strands below next stitch, purl these 5 strands together with next stitch on needle, purl 9; rep from * to last 2 stitches,  purl 2.
Rows 11, 13, 15, 17, 19: Knit 5, *slip 5 wyif, knit 5; rep from * to end
Rows 12, 14, 16, 18: Purl all stitches.
Row 20 - Work butterfly stitch loosely: Purl 7, *insert  left hand needle down through the 5 loose strands below next st, purl these 5 strands together with next st on needle, purl 9; rep from * to end
Repeat rows 1-20 until you have reached your desired length.
